Dev Interview: Juan Lopez

Can you introduce yourself (name, location, age, etc..)?

Hey everyone my name is Juan. I’m 41 and from Allentown,PA

How did you get interested in programming?

A friend of a friend is a web developer and I was curious as to what they do. Did a couple of google searches and came across Team Treehouse, Chris Sean, and then CodingPhase.

When did you start learning to code?

I started learning to code in 2017: however, I started to take it seriously in 2018.

Where do you learn new skills?

I learn new skills from all sorts of places. Resources like, TeamTreehouse, and even Youtubers like Traversy Media help with bridging knowledge gaps.

What do you love the most about programming?

This one is funny because I honestly like helping other people. So I like to learn a new concept, then take what I just learned and help out others who may be struggling with learning what I just learned.

What do you hate about programming?

Getting over the mindset that I have to know everything.

Are you currently working as a developer?

I currently work as a contractor for TeamTreehouse in the Full Stack JavaScript TechDegree.

What’s your favorite stack or type of applications?

I’m a little biased but I like MERN stack.

What’s a technology or language or skill you wish to learn in the future?

I’m not entirely sure yet. I’ve thought about PHP for WordPress but then again I’ve also thought about C# since there is always listings in my area for C# & .NET developers.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Not quite sure yet.

If you were to go back in time and give yourself some advice to make it easier to learn to code what would you say?

I would tell myself to dedicate some block of time and do nothing but code. Sometimes distractions like Twitter, Youtube, or even Discord/Slack can easily get you distracted and before you know it you’ve wasted your day/night doing nothing productive.
